Here is a simple love of the holidays and touring we did as a family when I was a child. Taupo, Alexandra, Christchurch, Waihou Bay, Ruatoria, Tolaga Bay are all clear destination memories from my holidays in the Zephyrs and Zodiacs my father was so proud of. Sometimes with a caravan and other times with a boat and tents. My favourites were the long weeks spent in the old hotel at Waihou Bay on the East Cape. Before the top balcony was glassed in this place was my heaven on earth. Many Kiwis will know it as the place where the movie “Boy” is set. So much a part of my soul are these times that when I was watching the movie, not knowing where it was filmed I recognised the rocks in the water in one of the early scenes! The felt pennants, here set into a Maorified frame a la travel maps of the era were a huge fascination for me. The red and white Zodiac we were in at this time had twin aerials! These flags, sheep’s tails and Toi Toi flowers were the flapping, flying signage of the family on holiday so here is a reminder because good memories are worth nurturing.
