Ten years ago I referenced the Tretchikoff Chinese Girl to create a conversation about the place of multigenerational Chinese Kiwis called POLL TAX. Of course the hub of the conversation was round the poll tax on Chinese immigrant workers who were charged as cargo, not passengers… I went on to create the BLUE LADY artwork to include the many Chinese arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand this last decade… This second revision of the POLL TAX artwork is asking the same questions of us about our Asian Kiwis post COVID-19. THEY ARE US references the prime minister's comment as if we are unlucky enough to be hospitalized during these following years we will know that they are many of the souls who will work to keep us well.
