Te Rauparaha is one of the great characters from the shared history of N.Z. It is not that these historic characters can teach us how to live but they can teach us how life was for Maori and Pakeha, post European arrival. Like Sitting Bull, Te Rauparaha is a historical landmark and forms one of a series of important ancestors I am keen to bring into the consciousness of all Kiwis. This image is created from a pen and ink drawing of the chief in the 1840s. I have added a ships title on his cap which refers to the Brig Elizabeth that Te Rauparaha once commissioned by trade for flax in Otaki to carry he and his men to Banks Peninsula for Utu! One Captain William Stewart agreed to carry the war chief and his warriors on a surprise raid to trick a rival chief on board and slap he and his wife in irons on the vessel. The Kapiti tribe then raided the apposing pa in the dead of the night. The opposition, surprised, slaughtered and cannibalised any remaining limbs of the cooked tribe were loaded into baskets and taken on board and back up the coast! . Yes, the same man who is credited with creating the All Black haka.
