"AMERICAN FABRIC"
| As a child in New Zealand I was transfixed by the extraordinary Catholic banners at my old church and I have memories of street processions and kneeling on hard seal to do decades of the Rosary while obsessing over the beauty of them. I enjoy texture and I was also immediately drawn to the crazy quilting of the United States. My young life was filled with Western movies and horse riding and I toiled for years in demolition work in Lorado cowboy boots. I relate. This artwork is an homage to those richly embroidered artworks and to the American way of life and it’s working men and their way of life, be they on a ranch, a building site or in service or hunting in their paradise. America today lives on the roads and buildings they created and enjoys the freedom and security a largely silent generation lived and died for. This artwork found it’s way back onto my drawing board while I was in recovery from ill health helped me to remember my own toil and the passions of working souls and inspire a renewed attitude to look for what we might do for our societies rather than what our societies might do for us and the rich life such dedication brings. It reflects my experience of a life lived under the American cultural shadow and many other things as well, make of it all what you will. Conversations with two purchasers recently have inspired me to revisit and slightly revise the artwork and now I intend again, to sell a small number of A1 artists proofs before committing to a limited print run of same sized artworks initially for the US market. The A1 artworks are a printed size of 30cm x 89cm. I have also printed a very short run of AO artworks that are very exciting as I look to understand the framing of such a dynamic size of 75cm x 128cm. |
